　　一些一般的疑问可以从教科书、百科全书或者相关的专著上找到答案。而那些比较古怪的和个别的问题几乎就只能直接问这些书的作者了，因为他们不能为了照顾少数会有这类疑问的人而把答案写在大家都去买的书上。现在不少媒体上都有回复读者来信的栏目。很多都是一些比较实际的问题，不加以解决会影响个人的日常生活。还有一些问题则是纯粹出于好奇，比如《金融时报》上“亲爱的经济学家”栏目被问到的问题。
　　有一个读者问，为什么书的定价要以99便士结尾。以前我们知道，很多商品的定价都以98、99结尾，这样能让消费者误以为它不是很贵。如果是这样的话，作者提姆·哈福德就不需要回答它了，致信人从身边的人或者教科书上就能找到这种答案，他就应该挑一个别的读者的来信作答。但提姆手里有货，他回答说：“有经济学家提出了新的解释，认为制定这样的价格不是为了利用人们的弱智，而是为了防止出现不诚实行为。如果一本书的标价正好是整数，顾客常常会交付刚刚好的金额。在这种情况下，店员不用打开钱柜，就可以轻易地替顾客把货物包好，然后把现金揣进自己腰包。价格定得越是不便，那些依靠操纵钱柜行窃的人就越不可能得逞。顾客将索要找零，而且可能会质疑一个从自己的衣袋里掏......    (查看原文)
